History
The origins of United Civil Construction Limited are in the formation, nearly 50 years ago, of the Whangarei based transport and logistics company, United Carriers Limited. While primarily an organisation that moved goods and livestock in an ever expanding fleet of trucks throughout New Zealand, the owners of United Carriers established a small construction operation under the management of Peter Robinson.
After Peter left United, Bob Guy successfully ran the fledgling Contracting Division throughout the 1970’s, during which time projects undertaken were typically the civil works associated with the development of small commercial and residential sections; although this portfolio was supplemented with the occasional Council or Ministry of Works road construction contract.
In 1979, Barry Stenberg joined United Carriers as the General Manager of its Contracting Division. With his background in working on large and complex civil construction projects throughout New Zealand, Barry, who later became a shareholder and director of the company, steered the United Carriers civil construction operation towards tackling bigger and more difficult projects. Over the next twenty something years, Barry and his team (several of who still remain with United Civil to this day), built a highly competitive business that built key infrastructure throughout Northland.
After Barry’s (albeit short lived) retirement in 2005, United Civil Construction Limited was formed in mid 2006 following a management buy in by two of Barry’s Project Managers. Andrew Campbell and Paul Mandeno together hold a 50% shareholding in United Civil Construction, whilst investment vehicles of the United Carriers Group retain the other 50%.
Since the establishment of United Civil, staff numbers have doubled and revenues tripled, as the company expands it operations and enters new markets both in Northland and throughout the rest of New Zealand.
